I seem to have the same problem. The background doesn't seem to change
when the forground does. It seems to me that highlighting is a computed
exercise.
If the forground color of the font is yellow then the background in a
highlighted
cell should be the opposite of yellow on the color scale. I don't know how
to compute
that but my VIM using yellow as the background. When I edit the
/usr/share/vim/vimrc
file and search for "set" they are all highlighted yellow. This problem
happens irrespective
of the bg={dark,light} setting.

The answer is in the /usr/share/vim/vimrc file:

" Switch syntax highlighting on, when the terminal has colors
" Also switch on highlighting the last used search pattern.
if &t_Co > 2 || has("gui_running")
  syntax on
  set hlsearch
endif

hlsearch is turned on here...

Simply add

set nohlsearch

to your .vimrc and it will never do highlighting.

You could also 'fix' /usr/share/vim/vimrc, but if you upgrade vim next time
(6.0
is arround the corner!) then chances are high that you will have hlsearch
on
again ;-)

So, this may be really simple, but how do you *un*highlight the
results
of a search in the vim that comes with cygwin? Searching for a pattern
highlights every occurrance found. But that highlighting seems to
stick, even on other files, and even if I get a new shell through cygwin
(either before, or after closing the current).

Thanks,

Tom
