I find a "work around" for the problem described below. I tried very
hard to find the real problem, but now I give up.

I add this to the end of the /etc/profile file (note that this will
not work before the setting of PATH, which is described by the command
PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin${PATH:+:$PATH}:."):
