First I'll say that your problem is related to \r\n vs \n line endings.

By "CYGWIN 1.0" do you mean the CD retail version of Cygwin?  The current net
release is Cygwin-1.1.4.

Uhm, you asking for cygwin to screw up your system by mixing versions of the
dll.  DON'T DO THAT.  Again, your problem is the \r\n vs \n line endings and
the chosen file processing default.  I'm guessing with B18 you were processing
in "text!=binary" mode and with the current version you're processing in
"binary mode".  If that is the case, remounting to text mode is all that is
required.
