TERM=cygwin is correct. But it also needs to be exported. TERM=cygwin export TERM or export TERM=cygwin Either works in bash. Also be sure the file is not DOS text mode (contains <CR><NL> pairs). If it does, then the actual value of TERM is being set to cygwin<CR> which is not a valid terminal name. If these doesn't fix the problem, then I have not a clue.
