Mark, I (naturally) had the same problem unpacking the gcc sources. Tar complained about libiberty. I resolved that by first creating the directory common/libiberty next to the gcc2.95.2-2/ directory, so that tar could place the files by following the libiberty symlink in gcc-2.95.2-2/.
