Hmm,

*All* of the versions of tar that I've used have been capable of
reading from stdin and writing to stdout using the "-f  -" option   ---
AT&T Unix version 7, CADMUS Unix, Apollo Domain Unix, HP-UX,
LynxOS, SunOS/Solaris, tar on a VaxStation and of course, Gnu,...

Which ones don't?
