I'm not sure whether or not it is "kosher" ...

You can download the source from:

    ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/make/make-3.79.tar.gz (or a mirror)

and build it by:

    $ tar -xvzf make-3.79.tar.gz
    $ cd make-3.79
    $ configure
    $ make
    $ make install
