Subject: Unsubscribe/subscribe messages to the list
Mime-Version: 1.0

I know it cyclic and the current rash will soon die down again but I feel
its time to point out the obvious about the perennial problem of people sending mail to the list attempting to unsubscribe. There are only
two ways that one can unsubscribe from the list:

   1. Do it yourself by sending to the LIST SERVER. The list server
address for unsubscribing from the cygwin list is
cygwin-unsubscribe AT sourceware DOT cygnus DOT com. For those that can't remember
this address, check out the bottom of every message that you receive
from the list. You'll see these lines:

Want to unsubscribe from this list?
Send a message to cygwin-unsubscribe AT sourceware DOT cygnus DOT com

   2. If, for some unforeseen reason, performing the action described in (1)
doesn't work, send email to cygwin-owner AT sourceware DOT cygnus DOT com and ask
nicely for help. This is the one other person that should be able to
help you with your difficulties. NO ONE else on the list is able to
do so. Cluttering the list with pleas (or epithets) will not help you
      (or gain you sympathy).

Please don't use (2) unless (1) has clearly failed for you and you've made
every effort to make sure that you're unsubscribing from the same email
address as you subscribed (i.e. make sure you're not trying to unsubscribe
from an address that you've forwarded the list mail to from some other
address of yours). cygwin-owner is a busy member of this community.
Responding to pleas for help unsubscribing should be limited to those who
have tried their best to unsubscribe and yet have not succeeded. This should
be the rare case.

On a related note, requests to begin a subscription should also go to the
list server, not the list itself. The various lists available and a form to
subscribe you can be found at:

    http://sourceware.cygnus.com/cygwin/lists.html

Please don't clutter the actual list and don't bother cygwin-owner with
subscription requests. Everyone is empowered to do their own subscribing
through this mechanism. It works, as the thousands of members of these
lists can attest. If you're experiencing trouble, check out issues on
your end. Other than rare temporary technical problems on the server
side that may cause some outages, there's little reason to believe the
list server can't subscribe you.

Hopefully this information helps those looking for subscribe/unsubscribe
help as well as those on the list already who receive these random requests.
