It sounds like you are using gcc v.2.95. That is a different release of gcc than the latest (gcc 2.95.2). You might want to upgrade your compiler to 2.95.2. I know there were problems with the 2.95 version that have mostly been fixed in the 2.95.2 version. Not sure if this is one of the problems. It always helps to get the very latest release of gcc when you are starting out. Just my two-cents worth...
