Do *NOT* use -fpic or -fPIC when compiling. And, while you're at it, you
definitely want to upgrade to a newer compiler. See:

  http://www.xraylith.wisc.edu/~khan/software/gnu-win32/ 

for details. Newer versions of the compiler will warn you and then ignore
these pic/PIC flags.
