Thanx for the help.
The problem is when yout put a device on the file name, e.g. c:\a\b.tar
Doesn't like it.
It came up because when I put this stuff on my new machine I installed a
newer version of CPAN. The new version doesn't pipe between gunzip and tar
on "win" machines. The old one did. The new version does the operations
separately and uses a fully qualified file spec, causing problems for tar.

My fix, go back to previous version of CPAN that pipes or use version of
tar/gzip found at www.itribe.net/virtunix These work with expanded names.

Thanx once again
