You can't let the --host and --target go default to i686 without causing
problems, unless you set up symlinks to make the corresponding
i586-pc-cygwin32 directories appear also as i686-pc-cygwin32. I've seen
places, more often under W95, where the --host and --target specifications
are ignored.
