I don't remember anyone claiming that Cygwin had rewritten the Windows OS. Unfortunately there isn't much that we could do to fix this problem that wouldn't be classified under the category "kludge". We might be able to work around this on NT but, in general, if Windows wants to treat a file specially then there is little cygwin can do to stop it.
