I have a problem combining the read command and a pipe in bash

bash.exe-2.01$ echo ffff | read ddd
bash.exe-2.01$ echo $ddd

bash.exe-2.01$ echo ffff > e
bash.exe-2.01$ read dd < e
bash.exe-2.01$ echo $dd
ffff

Is this a bug or what?
