Subject: phantom file "aux" under bash b19

I couldn't find any reference to this in the FAQ:

Under bash, b19, there is a phantom file "aux" that does not exist,
but affects things such as "ls" and "tar".

As an example:

  bash-2.01$ ls -l aux
  crw-r--r-- 0 0 everyone 0, 0 Dec 31 1969 aux

This works in any directory. One cannot name other files "aux". The
command:

  touch aux

hangs the shell.

I hope this information is useful.
