Under the Cygnus environment, simple system calls in compiled C/C++ programs
work fine:

system("dir > ack.txt");

This just redirects the directory into a text file.  However, when the same
program is executed at the MS-DOS prompt, it completely ignores the system
call.  Even system calls that send data to the standard output act the same
way.  What gives?
