I remember seeing it a couple of times.  I don't remember if it was a 
result of egcs or not though.  I do remember that when it happened it 
affected all open sessions using the cygwin.dll.  Also, I couldn't start 
new sessions until I had closed all sessions currently in progress.

Has anyone had a problem with other applications giving `out of memory'
messages after doing an egcs gcc compile?

Admitted that this is while compiling the man system, which can even
crash your vfat file system while doing `tar xzvf man-1xxx.tar.gz', and
uses exotic things not in cygwin, like `catopen'.
