I have tracked this down (eventually) to an attempt to free memory twice (two pointers to the 
same thing). This code has been working without a runtime error for four years, under Sun C 
(Solaris SPARC), IBM C (AIX RS/6000), and Cygnus b17. It has taken this new version 
(b18+Mingw32) to bring it to light.
