They are one and the same mechanism.  For example:

	bash$ export FOO=bar
	bash$ cmd.exe
	c:\>echo %FOO%
	bar

	c:\>exit
	bash$ unset FOO
	bash$ cmd.exe
	c:\>echo %FOO%
	%FOO%

	c:\>
