My first job at Data General was to design a replacement for their 80286-based PC. The old model used discreet logic to tie the chips together, and ran at (wow) 10 Mhz. The new model used a VLSI chipset and ran at (wow) 12 Mhz. My functions for this project involved designing the schematics, but the project was cancelled before any prototypes could be built.
