The X-Windows for DOS project began with a post by Wes Kurdziolek on the comp.os.msdos.djgpp. In it, he requested volunteers for a major project, porting X-Windows to the free DJGPP C/C++ compiler, which would make it available on the previously unavailable DOS platform. This port would be made using the XFree86 code. Several volunteers later, and here we are:)
