I don't have a clue if and when there was a discussion on the list of a problem I have. Does this mean I have to download all of the traffic archive?

No. Stephen Turnbull has set up a search engine which you can use to search the entire mailing list archive for an arbitrary regular expression. Point your Web browser to this URL:

http://turnbull.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp/cgi-bin/search

and do whatever the instructions you get tell you. You will receive a list of lines in the archive which contain your regexp, with a two-line surrounding context. You can use this to decide which parts of the archive you need to download.
