I would find that confusing and annoying.

DJ's suggestion to copy the behavior of the lesstif HID sounds good.

How would that work when two or more styles have identical vias but
differing trace widths ?

I do like the idea of being able to clone the via style, though.
At present it is possible to modify the via style "on the fly" during
use of the line tool by keyboard command (eg Shift-Meta-v decreases
drill hole size).  I would find it easier to make changes of this kind
by using the 'a' key to clone a via.
One potential pitfall is that vias very often have traces that run all
the way to their center, so hovering over a via will also very often
mean that you are also hovering over a trace - so in that case should
we clone the via or the trace or both ?
