I've joined in working on this branch [1], because I did several years of work on getting gEDA into a decent state and I'm pleased to see someone building on it. I've added several performance improvements in libgeda, and fixed a whole load of stability bugs in gschem. If you like using geda 1.8.2 and you want something that's fully backward-compatible and stable, I encourage you to try it out, and send feedback.
