And slotting is not obsolete. I don't use it heavily for components that provide multiple instances of the same function, like 7400 or 7474, but I have started using it extensively for things like monitoring. I typically put an ADC to monitor voltages, currents, temperatures, PLL voltages and maybe other things. At the input of the ADC, there is a multiplexer like an ADG731 (32 inputs) which selects the voltage which is going to be measured. For the multiplexer I have defined two symbols: - a small, single pin symbol which has 32 slot definitions. Instances of these symbols end up being spread all over the design. - another larger symbol with the rest of the chip which typically ends up close to the ADC and either a microcontroller or an FPGA.
