This is what I use:

CURRENT_VERSION := $(shell git describe --abbrev=4 --dirty --always --tags)
CURRENT_BRANCH := $(shell git branch|cut -f 2- -d ' ')

Branch needs to be cut as it has * as firs character otherwise it would expand in
compilation.
