My attempt to duplicate this resulted in no success reading a file name,
but then easy save-as success, with the new title in the top banner of the window.

The new .sch file did not have a border put in it as happens when
using the new window button.  This might be scriptable.  Many steps
are scriptable in PCB with "action commands", but I've just used
gschem as is.
