At the user level, Freemacs is very GNU-like, with the main deficits being limit of 64K for each buffer, no undo, and a limit of 2 windows. It's extensible (in a language called MINT, instead of Lisp), with the kernel written in 8086 asm, and higher level functions in MINT. Some of the advantages are lower memory usage, can run in v86 mode, mouse support. It also seems "peppier" than Demacs somehow on my machine, so if you'd like Demacs but it's "too slow", you might like Freemacs. I use Emacs on my Unix account, Freemacs for normal use on the PC, and Demacs for files >64K (or browsing Info files :). Switching back and forth is no problem. Note that there is a list of Emacs implementations and workalikes, available in comp.editors and news.answers, or from the archive at pit-manager.mit.edu, filename: "/pub/usenet/Emacs_implementations,_list_of,_regular_post_[long,_FAQ]" Here's the Freemacs info from that list: name: Freemacs version: 1.6a implementation language: 8086 assembler extension language: MINT, a string-oriented interpreter inspired by TRAC (MINT means "Mint Is Not TRAC") scope of implementation: extensible hardware/software requirements: IBM PC organization/author: Russell Nelson 11 Grant Street Potsdam NY 13676 USA free, Internet: anonymous FTP from simtel20.army.mil from PD: grape.ecs.clarkson.edu [128.153.28.129] in /pub/msdos/freemacs BBS: +1 315 268 6667 - 1200/2400 bps, 8N1, 24 hrs, pub/msdos/freemacs No registration required to download Freemacs.
