Subject: djgpp 1.08, serial comms, demacs To: djgpp AT sun DOT soe DOT clarkson DOT edu (DJ's GPP mailing list) Date: Mon, 21 Sep 92 13:07:40 EDT From: Stephen Turnbull 1. I have tested DEmacs again, and it does seem to have a timeout on the startup tutorial screen. So it probably is not grabbing characters from the serial port after all. 2. Mike Castle noted that serial ports weren't a problem if the program didn't run in background. Under DV/X, it *is* possible to force a program *not* to run in background if you set "Direct writes to screen" ON and "virtualize text" OFF. This seems to have successfully solved the problem with DEmacs, as he suggested. (Obviously, not running in background is not that big an objection with an editor.) This solution does have the defect that you lose your desktop while working in DEmacs (or whatever program you are using). Also, on cheap screens like mine you get a distracting "boing" from the screen mode change when you hit the Desq key (usually tapping the Alt key) to get back to your DesqTop (mouse doesn't work since DEmacs is in Full Screen Direct Write mode). Note: DEmacs is lurking (rather, napping) in the background even as I type this :-) -- Stephen Turnbull The Ohio State University, Department of Economics 410 Arps Hall, 1945 N.
