First of all my set-up: 486/33 Gateway 200M IDE + 80M slave Phoenix BIOS 8M RAM DOS v5 + QEMM v6 NCACHE - 1.5M write-through cache 2M Ramdrive for temp files/swapping 4DOS shell I have never had a problem compiling with the Norton Cache although occasionaly I get a read error (Drive not ready, close door---on a hard drive???!!!), which I believe is a conflict with some other TSR although I've yet to resolve the problem. I used to use Super PC Kwik, but I didn't like the "all or none" (ie., your'e supposed to use all their products in some great scheme to speed up your computer) philosophy of the product --to use the spooler or keyboard programs, for instance, their disk cache must also be loaded. As far as the shell goes run, don't walk to replace braindead command.com. 4DOS supports command seperators and I've used similar system calls without problem. I do have a copy of ms_sh (164) which I use occasionaly for shell scripts, rarely as an interface. Also I've heard some good things about the products from MKS. I as final note, I do use ndmake, and have no problems with the set-up described above. Hope this helps. -d.clifton [99clifto AT lab DOT cc DOT wmich DOT edu]
