An older version of SDL was adapted to Nano-X. Now there is NXLib which should allow to compile an X11 based SDL to DOS. I ported both Nano-X and NXlib to DOS already.

SDL also supports sound and that is a different project.

To breathe new life into DJGPP I think it should be bundled with an emulator so it will run (almost) seamlessly on 64bit Windows.
