It _is_ fast, but Emacs 23 is a large executable (9MB stripped vs 6MB for Emacs 22.3 and 5MB for Emacs 21.4), so just loading it could take some time, at least with a cold cache. > Font-lock is on by default now, so maybe he should turn that off.
