Looks like I'm first going to have to obtain the latest sources to
work around the _rename problem which prevents ar from
working on my system at present.  This is causing grief for building
Make. I'm in the process of doing that, and I have obtained the 
binutils source and the current code from the cvs repository.
As soon as I have the current stuff working without change, I'll
be ready to start experimenting with changes.
