There's a good chance that a disk utility program such as the Norton Utilities could have reconstructed the disk without reformatting. There's an even better chance of recovering if you make a "rescue disk" before things go wrong. In Norton, disktool /saverescue records the partition tables, boot records and CMOS values on a floppy.
