In looking at the commit Roland mentioned it isn't real extensive.
Perhaps a solution would be to add a configure switch to enable the old
code and once 2.2 is more common it can be removed. Or maybe an interim
patch...Just thinking out loud. That leaves the other upgrade
dependencies...
