1) Reduce clearance to zero works nicely (select item then ctl-shift-K). I
just have to keep in mind the clearance is zero, just in case I ever change
back to lines instead of planes.
2) Surround the pad(s) with a plane. Draw a track through the pads with the
'new line clear...' turned off. Then press 's' to thicken the line up until
no gap remains.

I think "1" is pretty good, thanks all!
