This is of course the most critical problem. I guess, the cross
compiled gtk stuff is not working properly. Are there simple tests to
it that can be run for diagnosis? Perhaps a little "hello world"
window. Or a test suite that tries various features and reports its
mileage and spits out error messages whenever something is not quite
right.

In other words: Where would I look to fix the gschem problem?
(unfortunately, I never did any actual gtk programming...)
