Something I don't really like is its static width. The content does 
not adjust to the width of the browser window. Below a certain margin 
you have to scroll horizontally.

I like, how https://www.dokuwiki.org/ deals with this problem. There 
are three ranges of width. Each is associated with a different 
behaviour:

1) large width 
   --> fixed width of content, the rest is padded with an empty frame

2) medium width
   --> content adjusts its line width to fill the window

3) low width
   --> the side pane is transformed into a broad menu on top of the 
page, rather than on the side. Main content stretches over the whole 
width of the page.
