So I tried to use the most current stable version of guile. According to
https://www.gnu.org/software/guile/ this is v2.0.11

Download was fine. However, the build fails at the configure stage with
this message:

========================
Unpacking guile...
patching file lib/msvc-inval.c
Reversed (or previously applied) patch detected! Assume -R? [n] y
Configuring guile...
configure: WARNING: using cross tools not prefixed with host triplet
configure: WARNING: Guessing that stack grows down -- see scmconfig.h
configure: error: building Guile 2.0.11 but `/usr/bin/guile' has version
2.0.9"

=================
guile:
  Build failed.
=================

WTF? Why should the configure for guile look at the version of the binary
already installed in /usr/bin of the host system? This is a cross compile.
So it is supposed to be installed on a totally unrelated system.

I will try to uninstalll the guile-2.0 packages from the debian repo. Will
report my mileage.
