IMHO, it is quite lean compared to its commercial competitors
(Coreldraw, Adobe illustrator).

Inkscape starts in less than 5 sec on my not so fast dual-core Debian
powered desktop.

I beg to differ on the speed issue. With some of my heavier schematics,
there is a noticeable lag for pan and zoom. This is just 2D with a limited
set of colors and no complex transformations involved. On anything that
remotely resembles a contemporary desktop computer, pan and zoom should be
blazingly fast. Since Peter Cliftons added openGL and other magic to pcb,
the layout GUI beats gschem hands down for the same project (on my desktop)=
