The “real” URL shows in your status bar when you hover over the
link, but this is an illusion.

You can see the Google-ized “man-in-the-middle” URL by
right-clicking and copying the link (and pasting into a text
editor).

I've found that my browser spends significant time waiting for a
connection to google.com to respond when I click on search result
links, before I the target page loads.

Also, if you turn off JavaScript it will work in the “right” way.
But it's really impossible to use the web these days with
JavaScript disabled, unfortunately.

You can look at the source for a Google search result. Use
Firefox's View Selection Source.

For instance,

<a onmousedown="return rwt(this,'','','','2','AFQjCNEO_MSpksKyuMgmh07PH8c4IGzxpw','','0CFgQFjAB',null,event)" class="l" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmer"><em>Programmer</em> - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia</a>

You'll see that there is a real
<A HREF="http://en.wikipedia.org/..."> but there is also an
onMouseDown JavaScript event handler that hijacks the click and
invokes some special “link-rewriting” code.

Regards,
Colin
