That's pretty hot! Are they soldering anything unusual - e.g.
high-temperature melting point alloys of solder (as I believe used to be
used on TV CRT neck boards etc..)

I've found with the Metcal irons that you don't need such high
temperature - as they can really get the power through to the tip
anyway.

I've never used a Hakko system, but on some cheap irons you find
yourself having to overcompensate their poor power rating / thermal
regulation by turning the temperature up.
