Hi Torben-

As a general rule, you can use anything that you can make work!

I believe that the footprints in newlib/ are part of the standard pcb
library.

There are two types of footprints: M4 and "element files". The things that
you see in the pcblib file are, I believe, data used for generating the M4
footprints. These are old and we are no longer encouraging their use. The
pcblib.contents file is just an index for pcblib.

In general, if there's a specific footprint you need, and you can't find
it, you can ask on the mailing list. It's likely that someone has one that
they haven't published that they would be willing to share.
