I built 1.8.2 from source. The version in homebrew was not functional at the time (though that may have since been fixed).
And, yes, I’m happy with 1.8.2 for now (except for the desire to use gaf).
1.8.2 works mostly well, except some rendering annoyances (like the screen is not properly rendered after you select then deselect a part), but I can work around that.

No, I didn’t run ldconfig (not available on mac I gather).
Maybe instead I should set DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH? My current DYLD path doesn’t point to anything related to geda-gaf or GTK.
I’m not sure what to add to DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH though.

I can look into this, but isn’t Quartz being used (not X11)?

I understand — and really appreciate the help you’ve already provided. I would love to be able to use geda-gaf + pcb native on my mac, but it sounds like realistically this may not happen given that support priorities lie on other platforms (which I can understand). I may just resort to using it in a linux VM on my machine, which is a reasonable option, but not as ideal.
By the way, I’ve seen some discussion in previous threads about “native look and feel” on various OSs. Having spent days trying to get basic geda-gaf functionality on my mac (and having some success thanks to your help), I honestly don’t give a damn about “look and feel.” I just want to be able to use the damn software!!! (which I really like).
