Hi,
At the point of my gettext error, pc was running autogen.sh. Since I 
don't need the bleeding edge of geda, I followed your second advice and 
tried and build branch 1.9.2-20150930. And after some struggling with 
./configure and dependencies it worked like a charm! Thank you for your 
help.

So am I right to think 1.9.2-20150930 will be the last geda update to be 
buildable on Ubuntu 12.04?
