Up until not long ago, the version that installs from repositories
on Ubuntu 14.04 was the latest --- it may still be the latest, I
haven't checked whether there has been a new gEDA release
in the last 6 months or so.

You can certainly check running dpkg -l geda*, or apt-get install geda
(which most likely will list what needs to be installed and ask for
confirmation), or even with the graphical tools (synaptic or software
centre) --- that will tell you what versions the repositories install,
and then compare against gEDA's download site.

Cheers,
Carlos
