Just downloaded from sourceforge, untarred, typed make and obtained a
running gspicegui. This is on a Debian testing system.

Do you have have these two development packages installed:
"libwxgtk2.8-dev" and "libwxbase2.8-dev"?

A simpler option is to install the gspicegui program from the Debian
archive.
