It works fine for me on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) amd64 under GNOME 3
(GNOME Shell). I haven't had a chance to test other desktop
environments specifically. Is this your Ubuntu version?

I have geda-gschem package version 1:1.6.2-2 installed from regular
Ubuntu repositories.

Try installing the gnome package and use the “GNOME” session to see
if that works for you.

Maybe also try different GTK or QT themes... probably not a factor
but you never know.

Otherwise, you can install a fresh Ubuntu or Debian in a VirtualBox
image and use gschem there -- no need to resort to non-free
software. You could also use KiCad, but there's no reason you need
to leave gschem if you already are comfortable with it.

Regards,
Colin
