Default was 40, but problem disappeared itself. The real reason why bash
crashed remains unclear (I was no more able to reproduce crashes).

Successfully built gcc-4.2.2 using DJGPP v2.04pre. With 2.03r2 there are
much more problems related by obsolete binary packages which are
incompatible with WinXP ( I did not copy installation to the new
computer but installed from scratch).
