Sounds like you are using make, which has not been updated to use the
LIBC that is XP compatible (If I am wrong please correct me).

As Richad indicatd please try the 2.04 test version as I build the
zips from source on XP Pro with all (and I do mean all) the MS patches
and hot fixes/ rollups applied.
